Recall Training
A life-saving skill and the foundation of a strong relationship with your puppy.
Learn how to create a recall your puppy loves to respond to using fun, practical exercises that build trust, confidence and connection from the very beginning.
The Golden Rule
Never call your puppy for something they perceive as unpleasant.
Avoid calling your puppy and immediately ending playtime, clipping nails, or putting them away. Instead, make coming to you one of the best things that happens all day.
Your puppy should think:
"When I hear my name and come running, wonderful things happen."
Step 1: Start Small
Begin in a quiet room with minimal distractions.
-
Wait until your puppy is a short distance away.
-
Say their name in a happy voice.
-
Immediately move backwards as they turn towards you.
-
Reward generously when they arrive.
Use:
-
Tiny treats
-
Praise
-
Toys
-
Cuddles (if your puppy enjoys them)
Keep sessions short and fun.
Step 2: Become More Exciting
Puppies love movement.
Rather than standing still and repeating their name, try:
-
Running away from them
-
Clapping your hands
-
Getting down to their level
-
Using an enthusiastic voice
You want your puppy to think you're more interesting than whatever else they were doing.
Step 3: Practice Everywhere
Once your puppy is confidently recalling indoors, gradually increase the challenge.
Practice:
-
Different rooms
-
The backyard
-
Around family members
-
During play sessions
-
On a long lead outdoors
Increase distractions slowly so your puppy continues to succeed.
Common Mistakes
✕ Repeating the cue over and over
✕ Calling your puppy when you're unlikely to succeed
✕ Punishing your puppy when they eventually return
✕ Making every recall mean the fun is over
Remember: even if your puppy takes a while to come, always reward them when they arrive.
The Sielle Challenge
Aim for five fun recall games every day.
They only need to last 30–60 seconds each.
Many short, successful sessions are far more effective than one long training session.
Remember
Recall isn't built in a week. It's built through hundreds of positive experiences over time.
Make yourself the best part of your puppy's day and they'll learn that coming when called is always worth it. ♡
